Steps:

1. Rough line-work.

2. Finals line-work.

3. I set the line-work's layer to 'Soft Light' and paint a random pattern as a background layer.

4. I create a new layer for each base colour and use the polygonal lasso tool to select the area to be coloured.

5. Like the base colours, I create a new layer for each mid-tone. The mid-tones are painted in using the opacity brush.

6. I paint in the highlights (see step 5) and turn the line-work layer off. I also use the airbrush to paint in a black shadow over the area around the eyes and set the layer to 'Hard Light' (94% opacity).

7. Textures. Each texture has its own layer, with each layer setting set to 'Overlay' (the opacity differs depending on what effect you want, though I recommend not going above 45%).

8. I airbrush the shadows in and set the layer to 'Overlay' (15% opacity). I then duplicate the layer and set the copy's settings to 'Normal' (92% opacity). Normally I keep the opacity down so that it just takes the edge off the vivid colours that can come from setting the original shadows layer to 'Overlay', but I kept it high for this piece so that the final product would look a little more dramatic.

I also created a new layer and strategically airbrushed a white highlight over the skin to create a 'shimmering scales' appearance. I set this new layer to 'Hard Light' (29% opacity).

9. I add a basic background and apply a gaussian blur. I also airbrush a white highlight so that the figure doesn't blend into the background. The highlight's layer is set to 'Hard Light'(63% opacity).

10. I airbrush a white highlight over the face so that the figure and the background highlights don't appear disjointed. This layer is set to match the highlights.

11. The finished product. I add a gradient layer (set to 'Overlay', 63% opacity) to give the final product more of an 'aquatic' colour scheme.

Hope somebody out there finds this helpful.
